This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students in my class are part of the school's dual language program. This means that all students are learning material in both English and Spanish throughout the year. Approximately half of my students are native Spanish speakers and thus, learning English as a second language throughout the year. The other half of my students are native English speakers and must learn the Spanish language and also meet lesson objectives in Spanish.
After several years at our school, most of these students are bilingual and able to read, write, and speak in two languages!
How commendable, especially in this day and age. However, due to the high language demands of learning all subjects in two languages, our students need even more visuals than most.
My Project
Keeping students engaged for long periods of time while I work with small groups and individuals is challenging. However, bringing in more appealing texts and activities will allow my students to continue their learning while I focus on the varying needs of the class.
Scholastic News Magazine and DynaMath Magazine will allow students to deepen their literacy and math skills while having fun!
They will also allow me to focus on my small group instruction. A win-win!
Scholastic News Magazine, at 3rd and 4th grade levels, will support a range of readers. It is full of excellent articles for kids. Students love learning about current events, history, and scientific discoveries. They especially enjoy the Debate of the Week, which is a great foundation for our argument writing unit later in the year.
DynaMath Magazine uses high-interest, real-world math to build important skills. Every issue makes core math concepts relevant and engaging by showing students exciting ways to apply them in the real world. Students who finish their classwork early will particularly appreciate the challenge.
More than half of students from low‑income households
