Engaging Reading Material

My students need exposure to good quality reading material that includes topics relevant to their lives. These magazines will inspire the students to want to read and exposes them to different genres.

My Students

I am about to start a new year with new students and as of right now I am not going to be able to buy the reading materials for this new group of students. My previous classes have loved learning from the resource and I would hate for my new group to miss out. I teach fifth grade students that due to several different reasons they are lacking vocabulary skills. The students simply need more exposure to high quality reading material that is engaging.

My Project

Some of the students that I teach don’t get a wide range of exposure to different genres and events going on around the world. Each issue includes nonfiction, fiction, drama, paired text, and a poem. These magazines will provide the students with that and will convey the information in a way that the students can relate to it. Storyworks also provides a vocabulary section in every episode that helps enhance my student’s vocabulary. The teacher receives access to about ten different standards based activities that go along with the reading in the magazine. Some of the nonfiction readings even have a video to help the students really understand what happened in history.
