My Students
I teach all Gifted and High Achieving students at Otis J. Brock Elementary School. Otis J. Brock Elementary school is a PK-5 school in an urban area of Savannah, GA. Our school is a Title 1 school, serving a population in which 95% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. For the past 3 years we have worked hard and intentionally with our students to promote more academic growth. As the Gifted and Enrichment teacher, I work with students who have experienced high achievement and I work to make sure those students maintain high achievement and grow to their highest potential. Our school has made a lot of growth in student growth over the past two years and this year we are focusing on improving literacy skills, particularly in writing so that we can improve our student's growth AND achievement. This year, I will be implementing different projects and instruction that will help engage students in the process of reading and writing to develop those skills in the students that I serve.
My Project
Finding engaging informational text with multiple copies so every student in the group can have their own copy, can sometimes be challenging. Each year improving students skills in working with informational text takes the longest to develop. Having access to the TIME for Kids resources will provide more opportunities for students to work with informational text. These magazines will make reading informational text engaging with its format and relevant, current topics. The theme for my Gifted classroom is learning around the world and TIME for Kids is a perfect resource to supplement and drive weekly lessons. I will be able to integrate science, social studies, reading and writing through this engaging resource.
