Engaging Readers and Writers with Real-World Topics and History
Help me give my students relevant supplemental materials for several integrated Literacy units, including biographies for Black History Month and Native American Research Papers/Presentations. In addition, I'd like supplemental materials for comprehension activities/tests for novel studies.

My Project
I need more resources to support some integrated Literacy units that I've been doing or plan to do with my 4th graders. Specifically, I'd like some previously created graphic organizers and research templates to help students more easily gather information on their topics. I would also like more books on notable Black Americans, Native Americans, and novels that depict people with disabilities. All of these projects are designed to engage students in learning about different people and then demonstrating their learning in a fun and creative way.
We live in a beautiful, but not very diverse, part of Montana and I'm passionate about opening the eyes of my students to people who have made an impact on the world despite adversity.
The three effective and authentic projects that I'd like to supplement are extremely engaging to the students and also give them necessary information about our world and how people have shaped it and continue to do so.
One project that I do during Black History Month consists of researching notable Black Americans and their impact on our country. Students then design a stick puppet show featuring their historical figure during 1-2 events that shaped who they are and how they made a difference in our country. Another project is focused on learning about Native American tribes in Montana. I'd like to have students design trioramas on their tribe after extensive research. Another project that I'd like to do next year are literature circles using varying books about people with disabilities and how they overcome obstacles.
