My Students

My inclusive classroom is full of compassionate and creative young children. Our program is two half-day sessions and each class has a mix of typical students and students with disabilities. The children are unique and curious and love being in a supportive and inclusive environment. My school is very purposeful in celebrating the special gifts each child has and that each child has the possibility to grow and flourish in their individual way.

My goal in our classroom is an environment that is safe, stimulating, and supportive of all children.

Our vision at our school is “the possibilities are endless.” My hopes are that not only are the possibilities endless but that my students know our classroom will always be calm, comforting and responsive to each individual child.

My Project

My project is to build on to my classroom read-aloud library with a collection of books that have the theme of promoting students' social and emotional learning. My goal is for them to make connections and see themselves in one of the characters or relate to what the characters are experiencing.

“High quality literature in all its many forms has the potential to expand the horizons of every child—regardless of background or baggage, privilege or poverty", Lester Laminack so eloquently wrote in his book, "Unwrapping the Read Aloud: Making Every Read Aloud Experience Intentional and Instructional".

We have a read aloud each day to guide instruction with themes such as: developing empathy, talking about feelings, identifying with others, and fostering pride and self empowerment. We will explore friendships, sharing, families, and how to be responsible and empathetic global citizens. Reading aloud to children increases listening skills, exposes students to rich vocabulary, and allows them to make connections with the world.

Early readers need to hear texts read aloud to them, as well as hear strategies being modeled through think alouds during the reading of a text. This collection of books includes books that are chosen based around themes, genres, and story structures that help to bring high expectations to read aloud time in the classroom.
