Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students' families come from many different countries, and my students love learning about many different cultures. Curious, respectful, and caring are words that describe my students. My students cannot afford to attend professional performances on their own.
My students would benefit greatly from hearing and seeing multicultural professional music performers.
We work hard at our school to teach tolerance and respect for all cultures, and we have many many cultures represented at our school.
When we know about other cultures and other art forms, we have more understanding and tolerance. I would love to be able to provide some rich, extra cultural experiences for our children, to continue to teach them to respect others who may have different traditions than their own and to show them what is possible using just a few instruments and your voice. Also, they will gain a greater understanding of art forms that started in the USA and then spread around the world. My students, since they are from so many different countries, do not have the common musical/arts base that students in another school might have.
My Project
This year I would like to bring in Curtis Blues to perform his program "The Multicultural Roots of Rock and Rap." Mr. Blues is an experienced regional teacher/performer about these styles of music. His performance is very engaging and uses audience participation. He will engage and inspire the children.
This professional and accessible performance will inspire my students to think about the artistic possibilities they could have.
My students' families do not have the money for music lessons and extra artistic experiences. I think this will open my students' eyes to more opportunities for them. Also, they will gain an appreciation for some popular music styles.
I feel strongly about teaching tolerance and respect by getting to know the music of many cultures. We do this routinely in my music classroom, but seeing a live performance will be so engaging for my students, and they cannot afford this on their own. Last year we had a program about African music. This year I hope the program will focus on music that started in the USA and spread around the world.
