I'm a math coach at a Title 1 public school in Indianapolis. Many of my students struggle with math but continue to work hard each and every day.
My school is approximately 78% minority, free and reduced lunch and I want to make math easier for all of them.
This project will help that happen.
These are our "babies". They come each day ready to learn and and do their personal best. For many of them this is where they feel safe and loved. I want to help them feel successful and work toward completing their education. It is a very diverse population with almost 800 students. Education is their ticket to making a better life for themselves.
My Project
Our School Improvement Plan requires all teachers to have a wall size number line hanging in their classroom. The new math series we adopted includes one as a resource but it is not "primary grade (K-2)" friendly. It is black and white with small font and can't be read from across the room by the younger students. A number line that is "kid friendly" is essential in every classroom. It is used on a daily basis by the teacher and students It is reference in many lessons and activities.
Students need a giant number line that they are able to see from their desks to be engaged in instruction and lessons that are taking place in their classroom.
They use it to count, order, compare, add and subtract. These are just a few of the basic skills needed to develop good number sense in each child.
Please help make these number lines possible. We would like the same one in all primary rooms for consistency through the years. It will improve the students ability to focus on instruction and help them understand the skill that is being taught.
