Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten at a high poverty school where the majority of my students don’t speak English as their first language. I have quite a few students who come from broken homes or some form of trauma already and they are only 5! They are loving and want to learn, but many struggle with behavior issues and it is challenging for them. The majority of my class also did not attend preschool and this is their first experience in school. I’m working hard to get them where they need to be as they learn the basics on top of our standards. Please consider helping my sweet students who need all the resources they can get to help them learn!
My Project
Many of my students are from other counties and do not speak English as their first language. Having an easel is such an essential item in a primary classroom, but especially when visuals are the key to helping non English speakers and students who are below level. I need a space to make and display charts for my students to help them learn and get closer to being on level. I make a chart for almost every lesson and sometimes multiple for reading and writing time. Learning to read and write is a huge focus in kindergarten and having the proper resources is key to get my students to where they need to be. The primary notebooks have a space for them to sketch and label and lines on the bottom for them to write words and sentences as they get to that point. Before kids can produce full sentences, they start by expressing their words and written thoughts in picture (sketch) form and then as they learn sounds they can label their pictures, so these notebooks are helpful for their reading and writing process. Working with students who come from poverty and are non English speaking is not easy. I’m trying so hard to engage these students who really struggle with behavior issues and come in to school so much lower than they are expected to be. These resources will help me teach them and get them on level!
