Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I introduced my students to Google Docs and they begged me for more writing time! Seventh graders begging for more writing? I want to bring this technology to my class so students have a permanent and reliable computer to access. Chromebooks will be used before, during, and after school.

I have been attending conferences, workshops, and exploring the many ways to integrate educational apps in my class, and I finally have a clear picture on how to effectively merge Chromebooks into my curriculum to engage, teach, and reach my students.

I have about 120 seventh graders, about 80% of my students are ELL's, and they all qualify for free lunch. My students are eager to use technology, and they look forward to our short (35 minutes per week) visit to our computer lab to use slow, dated computers. Recently, I tried to use Google Docs to introduce students to a shared document, so I can give them instant feedback as they typed, but our old computers could not handle the task! Computers crashed, browsers froze, and once again we were disappointed in our attempt to access technology. On a positive note, students were engaged, students were impressed by the technology, and students showed genuine interest in writing! I can tell students will enjoy revising and editing!

My Project

There are countless ways that Google Apps can change the way educators teach - I plan on using Chromebooks to engage students in writing and reading! First, students will type their drafts using Google Docs (word processing), and I will be able to log in to annotate their writing as I'll give students feedback, words of encouragement, and revisions using the Comment feature. The best part - students can respond or ask me questions about their writing using the Comment feature! Students can have a discussion with me online, they can ask me questions, and take charge of their own learning! The second way I plan to heavily use the Chromebooks is for reading articles online. Students can annotate a shared article using Google Docs. Students can see the comments, questions, and responses their peers are submitting to encourage collaborative learning. Other apps I will use include Google Drawing for students to creatively summarize. Chromebooks will be used extensively by students!

All students deserve an opportunity to have their desire to learn met.

Modern technology has created a desire in my students to write and make their writing better! My students are bright, eager, and ready to take the technology leap! Help us get Chromebooks in our class so my students can be empowered to learn!
