My Students
I teach ninth graders, the "newbies" at high school! They are so excited but also nervous about this new educational journey they have embarked on. Freshman can also be very eager and do really want to learn. But nothing kills learning like being forced to read boring literature.
New literature will open my students' horizons and introduce them to perspectives that they may not be familiar with in the mostly traditional rural community in which they live.
With this novel, they can briefly "get away" from their sometimes sheltered lives and even learn to empathize with characters that may not be anything like them.
My Project
I will offer The Hate U Give as one reading choice on a list of several novels offered for literature circles. In literature circles students share their insights with one another in a small group setting. For many students, this setting helps them feel comfortable to share opinions. Also, choice helps create engagement; reluctant readers are more likely to read, discuss, and really immerse themselves in a powerful, current, and important story.
The Hate U Give is such a gripping story that students will easily engage in thought provoking discussion.
This novel will widen the perspectives offered in our school library and will help students gain empathy and compassion.
