This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The economic hardships that students in a Title I school face already create disadvantages for students, but the last two years have added additional challenges. Where I live in Utah, our schools were closed from March 2020 through the end of the school year due to COVID-19. This year, we have had remote learning, quarantines, and COVID-related restrictions in the classroom. My 1st grade students are resilient champs! They haven't let any of this get them down, and continue to try their hardest each and every day. But, the fact remains, COVID has affected their learning in multiple ways, and they need to catch up.
My Project
The use of whiteboards is almost a daily activity in my classroom, especially in math. Using the workshop model in math, students come to the rug with whiteboards for guided practice and to record modeled strategies. The whiteboards allow me to see exactly what they are doing, as well as provide an easy place for them to show and share their work. Other supplies will provide hands on opportunities for students to engage in a fun way with content. I have seen how choice can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
