Engaging Independent Practice for Beginning Readers

My Project
This year I am working with a diverse group of energetic Kindergarteners in need of interactive and engaging modes of practice. They came from many different backgrounds and experiences and have meshed into a wonderful working unit who daily build our recognition of letters, their sounds, and how to encode and decode words. To do this well, more than paper and pencils is required. Small group practice for all is essential and when I am in these groups the remaining 5 and 6 year olds require high interest activities that are of quality to keep them engaged and moving forward as learners.
Through this project I hope to provide my incoming students with a group of activities that allow them to independently practice building and decoding age appropriate words.
These tools include tiles and dials that build words to match pictures, leveled readers with Versatiles that ask children to build words and self- check for accuracy, and blending boards to help them isolate phonemes as well as blend them in small groups as we work to unlock the systemic process of decoding.
Thank you so much for your help providing these wonderful tools for my students. Kindergarten brings so many new concepts and with your help my students will begin their school careers with a joy for reading.
