This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a high poverty school in North Hollywood, CA. We have a very diverse student population. I have been a first grade teacher for the past 19 years, and will start the new school year off as a Kindergarten teacher.

I am very excited to begin this new adventure in Kindergarten, and can't wait to help set the foundation and create a life-long passion for learning that these little ones will carry with them all throughout their academic career.

My Project

This project was inspired by Mrs. Livingston's project that helped her fifth grade students bridge the learning gap between school and home. By effectively engaging the entire family in high interest literature, and then rewarding them with popcorn and a movie, this got me thinking about fun activities I could do for my incoming Kindergarten students, to help engage the entire family in the learning process.

My six-year-old son and I love to play educational games, and I treasure this quality time we get to spend together, as well as the learning and dialogue that takes place.

It was then that I knew that I could actively engage the entire family through fun games and activities that address a variety of academic areas such as language arts, mathematics, and science.

It is important for students to know that learning should not only take place at school, but should continue on at home. I would love to provide my parents and students with a variety of fun games such as Phonics Flip Books, an Addition & Subtraction to 10 Discovery Can, and Family Engagement Packs that they can play together, while reinforcing standards learned in the classroom. I will also create a worksheet to go along with each game, that the families can complete together, to provide me with a measurable outcome of the skill they are practicing.
