My Students
You know you've read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend. ~Paul Sweeney.
I want my students to feel the same way and a Nook might just be the answer. Even though a Nook is not made of paper, it has the power to engage reluctant readers.
My 5th grade class is filled with diverse learners and many struggling readers.
Finding a way to encourage, engage and excite them to read is a difficult task. They are living in a world of technology that has a way of keeping them engaged, the way books used to keep us engaged.
However, I have found the answer to making this task a little easier. I’ll never forget the day one of my students chose a reward at recess to read a book on an e-reader, instead of playing a game on the iPad!!! Wait, what??? He wanted to read and not play games?! What made this more exciting was the fact that he was a struggling reader who would never read for pleasure. I finally had him “hooked”! This was all thanks to a most engaging piece of technology - an electronic reader. In fact, the other students in the class were most jealous that he was able to spend his recess reading on the e-reader and they all began to choose that as a reward. Can you imagine my delight...my students wanting to read!
My Project
I am requesting 3 Color Nooks which are electronic readers. Nook Color's technology helps little fingers do big things! With just a simple tap, a child controls the story and can jump into an interactive adventure. Expanding text and zooming into pictures makes reading extra fun. It's an exciting and engaging book-reading experience for kids of all ages. The Nook has the largest selection of children's books, newspapers and magazines available on an e-reader. One of the benefits of the Nook technology is that one e-book can be loaded onto 6 Nooks--that is six books for the price of one.
With your help, students will develop a love and a desire for reading, which will prepare them for success in high school, college and their future careers!
Help me inspire my reluctant and struggling readers in the NOOK of time. This will make a huge impact on my students. I know they will be excited to come to school and look forward to reading books on the Color Nook. Help create lifelong lovers of reading
