My Students
Remember the magic of science class when you were growing up? Physics opens up a world of wonder and excitement for young minds. While learning important concepts, we get to have fun with the coolest toys in school.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds and from the start I try to instill a sense of wonder and awe in science.
The magic of Physics comes alive in my room with interactive projects, hands-on labs, and mind-blowing demos that reveal deep misconceptions most of us have about how things work. On the first day of school my students work together to try to understand how Lenz' Law works (without ever having been taught the concept). It's amazing to see the ideas that sprout forth on that first day. From then on, they are constantly challenged and must defend their positions with evidence.
My Project
My students had a complete blast with the couple escape room boxes I acquired last year. At the end of the year I was able to have all of my classes try them out. They had 45 minutes to work together using clues to solve their way through different locks (combination, word, key, number, etc.) to finally open the main box and solve the activity. Every single student was engaged the whole time, and many of them came up to me later and thanked me for the activity. It's something completely different for them to experience in the classroom. It worked out so well last year I wanted to get a few more boxes so that I can have my students in groups or 4-5 instead of 8.
My students will work in small teams to solve puzzles to unlock solutions to a main mystery all the while trying to beat the 45 minute clock.
It's a sight to behold when a class of 30 students are using their brains and hands to solve mini problems and activities that will get them closer to opening the final box. They are focused and determined. It's also something I can share with other teachers in my department.
