My students are energetic and enthusiastic English language learners who desire to understand everything that is being taught in their science and math classes at our middle school. When they have interesting visual and hands-on materials, it makes everything become so much more comprehensible.
Even when students use a simple balance to find the density of items around the classroom, it promotes prediction-making and engagement.
My students hunger for more non-book materials that can help them fully understand scientific concepts.
My Project
For my English language learners, having access to hands-on science and math materials, plus vivid visuals, will make everything they are learning so much more comprehensible and interesting. When students are learning about elements in their physical science classes, they can come back to my ELD science study skills lab and actually assemble and disassemble an ETA hand2mind period table. Additionally, the students who are taking life science classes will be able to examine 3D cell models and construct cells using the Animal and Plant Cell Assembly Model.
Another group of ESL students, who are working on more fundamental math skills to prepare for higher level mathematics classes, will be able to utilize a variety of ways to develop and strengthen their math skills by using materials such as the Star Right Math Triangulation Flashcards.
Because they are "write and wipe" cards, future students will also be able to use these cards.
The variety of STEM materials listed in this Donor Choose grant request will make a big difference in the future of my English language learners.
