My Project

My 18 first graders are a very creative and energetic group. Even at this early age, I have children together who come from Kindergartens around the world as far as Ukraine and India as well as from states as far away as Texas and Hawaii. Their interests this year are as diverse as their backgrounds. The one time they all seem to love is book shopping. They browse through the covers, take sneak peeks, and almost all of them leave asking when they can come back for books they could not fit in their book bin. Unfortunately, this is my first year at this level and my library for emergent readers is very sparse. I'm hoping to build up my collection at their level in time to keep them motivated to read.

Please help me provide my first graders with exciting books at their level that will continue to inspire their love of reading.

To ensure that read to self time actively builds word attack skills and deepens comprehension, I need good quality books that they will be interested in reading.

The few good books I currently have at this emergent level are being kept in daily rotation. The books I have put together in this wish list are at my students' levels and from popular collections. This way, if a child finds a character or series that they particularly enjoy, there are others to follow up with and connections can be made. Also, these books I have chosen include a wide array of main characters that will ensure each child can find someone that he/she can identify with.
