My Project

In first grade, students are tasked with mastering a wide scope of phonics skills and ultimately finish the year as readers. As we move through a rigorous phonics curriculum, students need opportunities to apply newly learned phonics patterns within the context of books. Unfortunately, many of the decodable books out there available for purchase can be a bit boring...I mean, how many times could YOU read about "a dog and a frog on a log" before you toss it aside and start playing Rock Band with your crayons and pencils?

These decodable books are written with student engagement in mind.

The series feature various high-interest storylines while still controlling for the phonics patterns first-graders need to practice. When students read books that they can decode successfully, I see their confidence and buy-in as readers soar!

Last September, I recall a student of mine, library book in hand, crying, "I can't read it. I don't know how." This is a common occurrence because the cool books on library shelves simply aren't written with first-grade phonics in mind! A few days later, I gave that student a decodable book that featured the phonics patterns she was learning in class and all the tears and frustration became a thing of the past. I'll never forget her testimony, "I can read all by myself!" Today, she is a fluent reader who is ready for second grade!

These books will provide more opportunities to create these empowering literacy experiences for my students- especially my struggling readers. They will also vary the types of topics students can choose from when they enjoy independent reading time. Please help my students see themselves as readers and practice essential decoding skills by contributing to my project!
