My students need access to microscopy, including two advanced microscopes, as well as prepared slides to engage them in analyzing human tissue and cellular physiology.
All of my students have been thirsty for a science teacher for the past few years. Now that I have joined the school and am exposing them to basic science concepts and filling gaps in their comprehension, they have become "hooked" by science and can't get enough.
I am blessed to teach about 40 deaf students in the greater Denver region of Colorado.
The charter school that I work for has done an amazing job providing these students with great teachers and amazing opportunities, and I'm happy to be a part of their team, especially because the students haven't had a full-time science teacher for a few years and have had to take online science courses to fulfill their credit requirements.
Because of this situation, the students have gaps in science comprehension, but more crucially, lack the hands-on experience, creative pursuit and analytical thinking that science spurs. I am doing all I can to fill these gaps, to see my students succeed in STEM-related tests, and to help them in potential future careers.
My Project
The students have already been enthralled by everything I'm giving them and I can't legitimately teach science or STEM concepts without some good microscopes. The few microscopes I do have are very basic and cater to a more elementary level, so I am hoping that a digital microscope and a high school level microscope will begin to fill my lab with advanced equipment and prepare my students more fully for future science courses that they will take with me, or at the college level.
This project will make a huge difference because microscopes will literally provide access to a whole new world for these students.
They not only can access the realm of science, but can enter the microscopic world, understand cellular function, analyze histology and pathophysiology, and become more educated about the world around them.
To garner curiosity and intrigue is always a top goal for me, and I am certain that these 2 microscopes and set of slides will provide that for my students.
