My Students

The morning bell rings, and within moments there are thirty-five five year-olds lined up at my classroom door, excited to shake my hand and ready to learn!

My kindergarten scholars often come to my door on the first day of school without ever having been to school before, without any knowledge of the English language, and without knowing any letters, numbers, and sounds.

My kindergarten scholars walk out of my classroom door 180 instructional days later knowing how to read, write, count, and most importantly...THINK! 68% of my students are "limited in English proficiency". 100% of my students qualify for Free and Reduced Meals.

My Project

"Why is it acceptable in this country to say, 'I'm bad at math'? Do you know how many people who would admit to being semi-literate? The first step we need to take as a country is to make it socially unacceptable to be bad at math [and science] just like it's socially unacceptable to be bad at reading." This quote resonates with me, and it is exactly what I think about when I advocate for STEM Education in the early learning classroom. It is isn't just about meeting an initiative, it's about making sure we plant the seeds for a lifetime of learning in ALL areas, so that children can bloom into well rounded, productive individuals. My students will be using the Classroom Microscope Slide Viewer, Microscope Slides, STEM Science Stations, Math Centers, Engineering Materials, and Math Mats at independent learning labs and in differentiated small groups in order to further develop their curiosity and love for all things STEM.

We know that math scores in Pre-K and Kindergarten predict both math AND literacy outcomes and that one possibility for closing opportunity gaps is to help children learn the types of higher level thinking skills that are used by scientists, mathematicians and readers alike.

STEM education in ECE is an issue of equity because we know that these higher level thinking skills and math knowledge are key to closing achievement gaps for kids.
