My Students
Each day, first graders depend on me to teach them how to read, write, and develop problem-solving skills that will be the foundation of their education. These students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Their families qualify for free lunch and often do not have the means to provide literature, manipulatives, and other educational tools at home. So, I feel it is my role to provide them with rich learning experiences on a day to day basis.
Due to their backgrounds and limitations in resources at home, my students often enter elementary school significantly behind their more affluent peers.
My Project
With 28 students in my class, it is impossible to give direct feedback on every math problem they do. I implore a number of strategies to reach the greatest amount of students, including center groups. During centers students rotate to computers, tablets, games, and teacher led groups. I recently noticed that students at the games were practicing skills incorrectly, which can develop difficult to correct habits.
To fix this problem, I went searching for an independent game that would also give students feedback on their work to help them make perfect practice.
The power pens from Lakeshore and corresponding games will give my students the opportunity to practice word problems, fractions, time, and more. The pens give a light indicator to let students know whether or not they have chosen the correct answer, letting them practice in a safe way while knowing whether or not they chose the correct answer.
