This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a diverse group of children who are inquisitive, passionate about learning, and motivated to succeed. They come to school every day excited about learning. They are also very proud of their accomplishments.
I teach in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in San Diego.
One hundred percent of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students are English language learners. However, they make great progress every year. Every spring, my school has a heart-warming celebration to honor those children who have become fluent English speakers. Parents decorate the auditorium, students give moving speeches, prominent people of San Diego say some motivating words, and there is never a dry eye in the audience.
My Project
After spending over a year at home on computers, my students are eager to read actual books. However, many of my students are not reading at the 4th grade level. It is really hard to find engaging books for the upper elementary grade student who is struggling in reading.
I would like to build a classroom library filled with high interest books for all reading levels.
My students have time to read independently everyday. Since books for struggling readers tend to be shorter, I need lots of books on hand. This is how they will not only improve thier reading skills but their love for reading as well.
