I am a speech-language pathologist at an elementary school in East New York, Brooklyn. A neighborhood in which research has shown around 24% of the children live in poverty. I usually service anywhere from 35-50 students in 3-K through 5th grade, who all have an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
My students tend to have one or more disabilities (cognitive and/or physical); however, they are all excited to come to their speech sessions to learn and excel.
Many of them have challenges at school and beyond but they come to their sessions willingly because we discuss their goals, the steps necessary for success, and how we, as a team, will achieve success.
My Project
Finding materials that are both relevant and engaging can sometimes be difficult. However, I have found that my students, both in blended and fully-remote learning, enjoy reading and/or listening to books by these authors. My students responded positively to the illustrations and easy flow of the text.
I plan to use these books to address many relatable themes in an engaging manner while increasing appropriate speech production and receptive and expressive language skills.
I look forward to adding these titles to my ever-increasing library, which will provide all of my students with more opportunities to engage with various levels of print. It will also foster their ability to make book to book and book to real world connections, which tend to increase their motivation and level of performance.
