My Students

The students I teach live in a rural farming community. More than 80% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price school lunch programs.

Regardless of the many challenges in their home lives, my students come to school with great hope and a love for learning.

They are creative, curious, and full of excitement and enthusiasm. They love hands-on activities that allow them to interact and create real meaning from what they are learning.

All the children in my classroom absolutely love learning! I teach using the guided reading model which allows students to receive a whole group, small group instruction, as well as reading stations to enable each individual student's needs are being met each and every day.

My Project

I will use these amazingly engaging books to create excitement for reading in my classroom. I am hoping students will be counting down the minutes until they get to read the next chapter of these books.

I am going to incorporate interactive science journals into our close reading study of the Race The Wild series.

In this book series kids race around the world studying different ecosystems. I plan to pair a scientific study of ecosystems with each book in the series. Students will read and collect information about each ecosystem while doing other research and using technology to increase their understanding.

I will also use the Choose Your Own Adventure series books to teach students about the comprehension skill of cause and effect. Students will read and then be asked to make choices for the characters that lead to different stories in the book. They are able to interact with the book in a similar way to playing a board game or a video game. The choices they make affect what happens in the story. They are going to have a blast reading/playing this book.
