My students need engaging read-alouds that will allow them to make predictions, connections, and inferences as they listen. These are incredible mentor texts that will provide the opportunity to get lost in a good book!
Imagine walking into a classroom and seeing children engaged in their work and in a place where they feel empowered to take control and have a voice in their learning. These are my students. They come into the classroom each day excited to learn and use the resources available to demonstrate their understanding. In our school, many of our students come from low-income families. We have a backpack program and the majority of our families receive free and reduced-price lunch. I have taught my class what it means to be good, responsible citizens and love providing them with opportunities to put their citizenship to the test. I strongly value student voice and choice in the classroom in order to make learning more meaningful. I would love to be able to provide more rich texts to help foster my students' natural love of reading.
My Project
I am looking to expand read-aloud titles in our classroom library. These books will be used during our literacy block to aid students in higher level thinking strategies and learning skills to grow and develop as readers.
Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbell can serve as both an incredible read aloud and a science lesson all in one!
The students will focus on the life cycle of a pumpkin, while still addressing the characters, plot, and setting of the story. The Recess Queen by Alexis O'Neill serves as a mentor text and valuable life lesson. This is a great book to talk about kindness and standing up for yourself.
These are only two titles that will have a lasting impact on students learning.
