Engaging Autism with a variety of tools

My Students

I teach 3rd-5th Grade Autistic Support in Philadelphia. My classroom is full of high energy students whose needs range on the autism spectrum. My students use and need varying supports and experiences to help them meet their educational, sensory and social skills needs at school.

I want to create an environment that is engaging, empowering and helps them reach their individual potential.

It is very important to me as their teacher to make their learning experience as positive as I can. Thank you for your consideration.

My Project

I have eight wonderful students whose needs, interest and abilities vary. There are a few items that would help all of my students throughout the day. Some like to fidget and could use pencil fidgets to help them stay focused. The playdoh will be used not only to strengthen out fine motor skills but also to elicit verbal requests, use as manipulatives for computation problems and as a calming tool. Games are a great way to work on our social skills, as well as our communication skills - the game Headbandz will be perfect for this. Legos will not only help us work on fine motor skills and social skills, but will allow my students to be creative, innovative with using a hands-on approach. The students will be able to create different structures such as bridges, buildings or even create vehicles. Their creativity is endless with the use of Legos.
