Engaging Author Study Books

My students need books for a fiction and informational author study.

My Students

Imagine what it would be like to walk into a classroom where all students could not keep their eyes off a book. My students love the read aloud portion of our class schedule. Books allow them to discover new experiences and learn new information.

Many of my students need engaging books to invest them in comprehension strategies.

Also, my students need books that allow them to study different authors. I want my students to be excited about the books we are reading so they can actively participate in our daily objectives and learn about influential writers. Our school community is located in a high poverty, urban setting. At our school, approximately 96 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. We are in our third year as a turn around school and our students are already making remarkable progress. My students are dedicated and excited about their learning.

My Project

This year, I had the pleasure of reading Robert Munsch books and "The Day in the Life of A..." series. My students were mesmerized by the humor and the information the books provided. In addition, I was able to teach my students about the authors and study the authors' styles of writing. Currently, I borrow these books them from the library. However, this limits my students because they cannot access the text at any time. Also, I cannot reference the books throughout the year. Therefore, making these books a permanent part of our classroom library would allow my students to have access to the books at any time.

First grade is when students begin reading and comprehending text.

My job as a teacher is to model and show them how to comprehend and understand books. My job is to also teach them about influential writers and the writing process. In order to do that effectively, I need read aloud text from the same author that align with my daily objectives. These books would allow me to do just that!
