My Students
Good afternoon,
I am a school social worker in an urban school district.
I service high school students who have Individual Education Plans and who have emotional disabilities. My students mainly come from poverty stricken homes and some are in foster care.
My students work very hard to stay engaged in school despite outside stressors. We have worked on sustaining and maintaining healthy relationships. For most of my students school is a safe haven as their home environment is very chaotic. The staff and I want to make the students experiencing as happy, safe and fulfilling as possible.
My Project
Our students come from low income single parent homes. Many of our children do not eat enough food and complain that they are always hungry or that there is not enough food to eat in the house. Although we have free breakfast and lunch at school, it is not enough food to keep our growing teenagers full for the school day. Staff at my school will pay out of pocket to feed the kids during the school day and will often give kids food to take home in extreme poverty cases. We are in need of food donations to continue feeding our students so that they can concentrate on their academics while in school instead of thinking of how hungry they are and when will be the next time they eat.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
