Engaging and Informative World War II Listening Center
My students need four wireless headphones with rechargeable batteries and World War II audio book CDs.

My Students
Thomas Edison once said, "If we did the things we are capable of, we would astound ourselves." I want to give my students who learn better by listening the opportunity to succeed.
My students are inquisitive special education students who love to learn by listening to the text as they read novels.
They are better able to focus their ideas by using headphones to keep out the distractions. Having a separate area where they would have to listen to the text makes students believe that they are different in a negative way, lowering their self-esteem, and making them less inclined to use the headphones in the Listening Center. Why allow them to fall behind just because they learn differently than the other students?
My Project
Having wireless headphones will allow the students to remain in their seats to listen to the text as they read along. This comfort level with hearing the text will encourage students to not be shy or feel like they will be picked on or bullied because they learn differently than others. Having all the novels that we read in class on audio CD will allow quick access to chapters that the students are having trouble with understanding. The novels we are asking for are Lord of the Flies and 1984, which were directly influenced by World War II, as well as Unbroken, which is a memoir of a fighter pilot and his resiliency during World War II.
All students should be able to learn through the methods that help them understand the material in the best way. They will be able to empathize with the individuals that survived or perished during a traumatic time in history, encouraging deeper classroom and group discussions.
Having audio CDs that deal with nonfiction, as well as classical fiction that was inspired by the events of World War II, is important for all students to be involved in learning in the classroom.
Students who can relate to the events of World War II during class will likely ask more questions regarding deepening their understanding of resiliency in the human spirit.
