Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The students at our elementary school live in an impoverished area of Los Angeles. Some of my students have difficulty communicating what they want, and some have difficulty accessing the school curriculum, as well as socializing with their peers due to their language delays. All the students I work with are vibrant and love learning through play.
Students retain what they learn best, when they are engaged in the activity and having fun.
The young learners I work with prefer items they can hold and play with, instead of looking at vocabulary flashcards. My students would highly benefit from the alphabet tubs and alphabet mystery box, as it will aide them in building their vocabulary and in learning how to describe and categorize items. Students will have the opportunity to build up their language by requesting, (i.e. "I want the fish") or by making comments, (i.e. "I found the zebra). Because the alphabet tubs and alphabet mystery box have items that include all the sounds of the alphabet, students that struggle with producing age appropriate sounds can practice while they play. Additionally, student can work on their social skills as they learn to share and take turns playing with the manipulatives.
