Every year, I find that young scholars enter my classroom with more context and background knowledge about the impact humans have on our Earth. This year, my students wrote and performed an opera about saving coral reefs and marine animals. They are now researching how our Earth's coral reefs have become so endangered and ways that scientists and the planet's inhabitants can repair and mitigate the harm we cause. The emphasis has been placed on reducing plastic consumption and finding alternatives.
The moral of the opera written by my second-grade students was to "spread the word about plastic's harm on the coral reef".
By immersing themselves in the texts I'm requesting, and allowing them to spread the word about Earth Day through passing out stickers, temporary tattoos, and posting signs, they will be fulfilling the mission they set out to accomplish back when they began writing the opera in 2023.
Additionally, as a teacher, I would love to initiate the process of starting a "Green Team" at our school. The supplies I'm requesting will also assist me in engaging with students across my entire school, not just my homeroom students.
