I teach a class of the sweetest first grade students. Many of these students come from low-income households, and incredibly diverse backgrounds. Some of them come from situations lacking a positive adult role model. Some of them come with the desperate need for something in their life that can give them some consistency. But there is one thing that each and every one of my students brings with them every morning when they walk through my door:
My students bring a sincere and loving heart with them each day to school.
No matter what is happening in their home, no matter how full their belly is, no matter how new or nice their clothes are, they bring a smile to my face as they hug me and say, "good morning" as they walk in the door. These students' eyes truly sparkle with a love for learning and love for others. Their jaws drop when even a pinch of magic is thrown into the classroom. My students are a constant example to me of the beauty and strength in diversity.
My Project
Effective 21st-century teachers are constantly thinking, "What can I do to make my classroom and content engaging for my students?" Students deserve an out-of-the-box educational experience that leaves them begging to come back to school each day. Gone are the days of sitting in a seat and working on worksheets. Nobody wants to learn math and reading that way, and it surely isn't promoting the idea that math and reading can be fun!
I want to create a Glow Games day in my classroom that combines rigorous academic content with an out-of-this-world engaging classroom environment.
Using the supplies from this project, coupled with my own content and lessons, I will transform my classroom into a glow-in-the-dark learning environment, using games to review and practice concepts in both math and language arts. I am continually striving to promote the idea that learning can be done in lots of different forms, and I hope to create an experience for students year after year that not only makes them say, "WOW!" but also helps solidify concepts for them in a new and interesting way.
This idea stems from the genius brains of Hope and Wade King, educators and best-selling authors of "The Wild Card." In addition to being edu-rockstars, they are the creators of the nationwide "Get Your Teach On" conference. After attending and seeing the Glow Games in action, I noticed how different my heart felt about explosive content and engaging rigor, and I knew I had to bring it back to my own classroom and students.
