Engagement Through Gamification and Symbol Search

Help me give my students more engaging participation in class. With these items I plan to gamify my classroom, play educational videos and relevant music! I also hope to acquire symbolism dictionaries to further their text analysis.

My Students

Students in my classroom are exposed to the idea of culture, even their own American Culture and how it may influence them or others. I have them engage in critical discussion on novels from many genres and cultures to get a greater sense of the world around them. Students in the class are also encouraged to do independent reading, and I have more than 200 books in my classroom for them to choose from and check out!

Students in my classroom are discovering the joys of reading and looking at the world more critically through discussion!

I try my best to create a classroom environment in which students can feel comfortable talking about difficult subjects and listening to others ideas and opinions. Through analysis and discussion, they are acquiring understanding of others around them and ability to communicate positively with others!

My Project

In my class currently, I play relevant music every day for students to enjoy. This music typically builds on the topic or material for the day and makes them feel welcome. It also helps them experience different cultures and build off their background knowledge. Many students say this is one of their favorite things about coming to my class! However, the speakers I have now are not quality enough for students to hear the music clearly - and even more so when I play movies at the end of the quarter (like The Great Gatsby) or instructional videos.

Furthermore, I hope to gamify the classroom by allowing for more verbal debates and discussions.

I believe the speaker, game buzzers, & stickers will enable me to engage them through positive reinforcement! In addition, I sometimes have a hard time engaging students with my voice over the course of the day and would love to have a voice amplifier to allow them to hear me better. This will improve my energy over the 4 classes I have each day.

Finally, students in my class are asked to analyze their texts through figurative language and symbolism. As it is now, I have them look up the meaning of symbols online. But it would really enhance their learning and understanding of symbolism if I had a class set of dictionaries for them to use. This will also help cut down on their screen time and keep them engaged in learning. Students will do symbol searches, which I also plan to gamify. Finding symbols in the text is often very exciting, but having a greater understanding of each symbol will immensely help!

Overall, these items will help to better engage my students through the concept of gamification that I plan on implementing.
