Engagement Through Experiments (A Hands On Approach To Statistics)
Help me give my students the gift of real-life applications in analyzing statistics through lab equipment including 23 SlightTouch Wrist Blood Pressure Cuff Monitors, 23 Zacurate 500BL Fingertip Pulse Monitors, and 12 tape measures.
My school is a public comprehensive high school including grades 9-12. The student population is somewhat diverse ethnically; however, very diverse socioeconomically. Students range from driving high-end cars to school to needing financial support to buy bus passes to get around town. As a result, there is a huge gap among what technology students in my classes can afford to supply on their own. My school is, however, very proud. The spirit on our campus is electric. Every Friday, you can find students and staff dressed up in black and gold attire showcasing our pride and coming together to be stronger. I am extremely happy to call my school home and hope to provide additional support to those students in need by offering access to technology they may otherwise not be able to use.
My Project
A typical day in my classes (Algebra and Statistics) is high energy and full of applications of technology and analyzing data. Unfortunately, I find myself limited on what resources I have to collect it. My hope through this project is to obtain materials so that my students can collect real and accurate data.
While it is easiest to use data found online, I find that when the data becomes personal, student engagement grows exponentially.
Through this donation, I am asking for 23 Wrist Blood Pressure Cuff Monitors and 23 Pulse Oximeter Blood Oxygen Saturation Monitors. I hope these monitors will allow students to collect data on their stress levels and fitness to analyze. Students will carry out inference procedures to compare general teenagers, genders, and measure relative standing to medical recommendations. I want to use the fingertip monitors to record student pulses and have students construct 1-sample t-intervals to estimate the mean pulse rate for high school students. I would also like to create a new lab where students record their resting/active heart rates to carry out a matched-pair experiment.
Lastly, I am requesting twelve tape measures that would be used to collect data such as heights and distances. While I have made activities such as “Barbie Bungee” and “Cookie Culprit” where students analyze regressions and make predictions, my class would benefit greatly by having a more accurate method of collecting data for such labs.
Overall, these donations (blood pressure monitors, fingertip pulse monitors, and tape measures) will improve my students' lives. The blood pressure and pulse rate monitors will help with collecting real data and increase engagement. The measuring tapes will help accurately measure various lab activities. Please help by donating to my project and allow my students the opportunity to learn math in a more creative way.
