Engagement is the First Step

My students need stability balls to increase engagement and attention, and technology to allow them to extend their learning outside the classroom.

My Students

When students come from a high poverty neighborhood, there are more pressing matters than purely academic a teacher must address. Luckily, at my school, students are excited to enter the doors every day to catch a glimpse of the world around them.

Many of my students do not have an ideal home life, however, their passion and zeal to learn from every opportunity is humbling as an educator.

My students particularly embrace science, and the idea that they have the ability to understand the world around them. When they realize that science IS everything and everywhere, they begin to see that learning extends far beyond the walls of any classroom.

My Project

Imagine a day in which you were forced to sit silently for most of your waking hours. Unfortunately, that is the reality for too many young students in schools today. I continually strive to push the boundaries of the status quo in order to meet the ever-changing needs of my adolescent learners.

Learners in my classroom will see what true engagement looks like, and will share their love for learning with others.

In order to meet the needs of my students, it is necessary to recognize the unique spot they are in developmentally. With alternative seating options like stability balls, my students will be able to expend any pent up energy, release the tension and anxiety they have, and engage the kinesthetic portions of their brains to increase engagement.

By allowing students to choose their seating options, engagement and curiosity will grow. With new technology such as the Hovercam, microscope adapter, and cell phone adapter for microscopes, my students will be capable of taking their learning outside my classroom. In a high poverty school, parental involvement is critical, and the best way for that to come to fruition is for the kids to advocate for it. With these new items in my classroom, students will be allowed to take snapshots of microscope cells and organisms, or videotape a dissection and send to the families at home. Increasing attention and engagement is only the first step in a long line of positive outcomes!
