My students learn best when doing hands-on work. They come from different socio-economic backgrounds and light up my day with their laughter and stories. We learn from each other, and I know doing hands-on learning is the best way for them to succeed as 21st century learners.
I have taught a wide range of students with differing skills and personalities.
Each student walks into our classroom with different needs and wants. Working as a classroom community, we develop skills that will help foster their growth as global citizens. We learn best with tactile activities and discussion based lessons. Our school caters to several different types of students with different home lives. The town may not be a metropolis; however their heart is large as a community. They have stepped up together to work as a team, which models to the students what is needed for a healthy community.
I have taught a diverse group of students, each student teaching me something different. I enjoy immensely the discussions we have together and the learning that takes place in our classroom.
My Project
The use of these materials will find ways for students to be engaged in the classroom that encourages thinking outside the box.
Although common materials, each has a purpose in giving the students a way to create their own masterpiece.
The students can use the materials to create catapults, different types of towers, bridges, and so much more!
Also, the materials can be used in various ways to give students ownership for their education. Each serves a purpose in helping them understand better the world around them and engages the students to become global citizens. The Magnatiles, tape, straws, foil, cups, pipecleaners, straws and building blocks will be used as tower building stations. The hot glue guns and popsicle sticks are able to be used with a project to integrate the fairytale “Goldilocks” and building her a more suitable bed. The glue, strarch and glitter would be used to create slime. The popsicle sticks, rubberbands and spoons are used to complete a catapult challenge. The beauty of the materials needed is that they can be interchanged with different challenges.
The activities also encourage "soft skills" which are imperative for the work place, such as collaboration with others, communication skills and problem-solving with different scenarios.
