This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Reading improves our vocabularies, self-esteem, discipline, creativity, focus, and memories. The more a child reads, the more these qualities grow. When children do not like to read, however, they tend to read less. They do not develop these qualities to their fullest potentials.
My students attend public school in an urban district.
Their families face many challenges, including illiteracy, poverty, and disenfranchisement. Over 90% of the students at my school qualify for free or reduced lunches. In addition, many come from families where the adults did not finish grade school. As a result, developing their literacy can be a challenge.
In my classroom, we read quality literature in books we can hold in our hands, not from anthologies. One of my biggest goals as a teacher of reading is to develop the habit of lifelong reading in my students. This is best done in an environment where students have choice, as well as access to a wide variety of books in a range of genres. My students get excited about reading whenever I introduce new books to our classroom library, and when they get to choose the books they want to read.
My Project
California standards for fourth grade include a heavy emphasis on the reading of traditional literature. I am requesting a set of books for our classroom library based on traditional folktales from around the world. I hope to engage even my most reluctant readers in this genre by providing students with beautifully illustrated versions of these traditional tales, in language that they can understand. In addition, I have chosen a number of traditional folktales in graphic novel form to make the genre interesting and exciting to students.
This project will make a difference for my students by enriching our classroom library with books that will engage them.
The more engaged they are in reading, the more they will read, and the greater their literacy will develop.
