Engage High School Students with World Through Newspapers and Magazines
My students need subscriptions to current event magazines like The New York Times Upfront to engage and connect with the world.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
During sophomore year students learn the history of the world from 8000 BCE to modern day. During these lessons it is essential to connect the lessons of the past with the current events of today. However, my students don't have access to quality periodicals as our school doesn't have a library.
My students are incredibly hard-working and inquisitive.
They are constantly seeking out connections between the events of the past and the news of the day. They usually get their news from Facebook and Twitter and TV broadcasts - despite the love of holding a book, or magazine or newspaper in their hands. In the past I have brought issues of National Geographic and the Economist in for class use and the students have LOVED flipping through them and reading about far off places and peoples.
My Project
These 16 magazine subscriptions will be used between two classrooms serving more than 200 students. Students will use the magazines to complete extra credit and homework assignments. They will be able to take the magazines home and read them at their leisure. Arriving biweekly, the magazines will allow my students to keep up with current events, to follow developments in other countries far and wide - they will inspire a more complete world-view and engaging discussions.
Our school unfortunately doesn't have a library and budget cuts in our city have limited the resources and hours of the surrounding public libraries.
These magazines will begin to level the playing field for access to current events for my students. Help them become engaged, informed citizens of the world they study.
