My students need a color printer, laminator and large poster paper so that I can engage them in learning language through Science and Social Studies with real images, songs and poems for years to come!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are AMAZING 2nd grade bilingual learners ready to take on the world! Most of them are English Language Learners and their families come from countries around the world, living the American Dream. The rest of the students are native English speakers learning Spanish. Many of my students struggle with issues of poverty and access to academic experiences. Fortunately, bilingual education is one of the best ways to close the achievement gap and to break down barriers of racism and socioeconomics! Actually, if a student is allowed to learn in their native language, they acquire English at a better and faster rate than those who do not. And they also have bilingual skills to share with the world and to learn about other cultures and perspectives!
Unfortunately, however, I do not have sufficient materials in Spanish to help support their learning...this is why I need your help!
Any donations will directly affect over 50 students as I teach 2 classrooms of students a day (they rotate with an English teacher).
My Project
These materials will make a difference because I will be able to print REAL COLOR images of the science and social studies topics we are learning about in my 2nd grade bilingual classroom. I do not have access to many materials in Spanish therefore I must always create my own. Our school does not have money for many office supplies and we often run out quickly. We also do not have access to a color printer. With a color printer and laminator in my room I will be able to keep these materials for years to come and share them with my colleagues.
I plan to print real images of our units on plants and soil, the community, and matter.
The strategies I will use are a part of the GLAD strategies (Guided Language Acquisition and Design) created to engage English Language Learners in language development. My students will sort and categorize the images to engage them in the beginning of our unit. It is amazing how much a real image can spark the imagination of the students and conversations among my students. Next, I will put the images on poster paper where they will label the images and use it as a reference on the wall as they work on their projects. I also will print images from the bilingual stories we read for them to sequence and label important vocabulary in Spanish and English with partners or in a small group. For our social/emotional curriculum, I will use images to help the students recognize and label our emotions. All these strategies are amazing in helping students learn language and to engage them in our themes and with each other! Black and white pictures do not suffice!
