My Students

I have the privilege of working with 30 fifth grade students in Bishop, California. Our small town is three hours from the nearest city, but our remoteness is part of our charm. My students might spend their weekends fishing, buck or bird hunting, skiing in the mountains, dancing at pow wows, or playing sports. It is their diverse interests that make our classroom a community.

Each day my students come to our classroom ready for the next learning adventure.

They truly enjoy experimenting and challenging their minds while focusing on building leadership skills. We came together at the beginning of the school year to create a mission statement as a class. After that, students wrote academic and personal goals for each trimester. When students reach their goals, we celebrate big! We are halfway through the school year and every student in our class has learned the value of hard work and determination.

My Project

These STEM activities and games will be used by all students to encourage meaningful interactions, cooperation, and creativity. Our classroom does not currently have any building supplies or games. I would incorporate the use of these supplies into science curriculum while also using them for choice "STEM Time" and during rainy day recesses. Choice STEM Time will be a reward for students who have met goals or classroom expectations. My students will be so excited when they get to build with LEGO bricks or compete in a game of Jenga during class parties instead of watching a movie!

As part of our leadership focus, students are learning the importance of synergy.

When students go home and watch television, play video games, or get on social media, they are not learning and practicing fundamental cooperative skills. Therefore, our classroom needs to be a place where students have fun while learning and playing with others. I've witnessed my students actively engaged in building spaceship landers in science and playing math games together and it's magical. I am so excited to be able to provide more of these fun and interactive experiences for my current and future students.
