Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am currently a fourth grade teacher in a diverse elementary school. I have 21 students in my class which I am responsible for teaching all subjects. Our school is 76% free and reduced lunch, therefore, our parents are unable to participate economically with their students. Our school district has adopted the inclusion classroom. This means that some of my students are special ed.
In this age of high stakes testing, science education is not always thought of as important. However, as an educator I understand that all subjects are important. As more and more jobs are being outsourced overseas I know that my students are competing in a global environment. I want to hook my students now so that they will be interested as they enter high school and college. Science should not be learned by reading a book and taking a test. My students need learning tools in order to experiment with. Research shows that students are better learners when they are active participants. I want to provide them with materials that will make them active learners. Like other school districts my school district does not supply all the materials that are needed to educate students. With your help I can provide these materials for my students.
In order for my students to be active learners I need to provide them with good lessons and solid experiments. These experiments would include an electricity lab, energy kits, books for my students to read, activity cards, and teaching tools to make energy come alive for my students.
Science education is very important for our future. You can choose to make this education possible for my students. Help me make science come alive now for my students, so that maybe it will spark an interest and build into a passion as they get older. Your help will ensure that my students have a chance at the global competition they face as high school students.
