This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kids are bright young men and women who are interested in the world around them. We are a career and technical education school that focus on teaching design skills to our students.

My kids face many challenges in their everyday lives.

Many lives in unsafe neighborhoods and travel over 1 hour to attend school in a safer neighborhood. More than 70 percent of my kids qualified for free lunch. Despite their challenges, my kids continue to learn and create beautiful works as they work toward a better future for themselves.

My Project

We take for granted that basic necessities are our rights. However, not all our children have access to food, the most basic of all necessity. Many of my students are high school teenagers from some pretty rough neighborhoods. They choose to go to our school because it provides a safe environment. Many of my students stay late at our school to participate in activities that will help them prepare for a brighter future. Some of my kids tell me that the reason they do not go home is that their parents have to work late to provide for them and for many, being home alone is not always a safe bet given the neighborhood that they may live in. As a result, many of them stay late at school. Since many of them receive free lunch, many of them do not have money to buy snacks when they stay late. Thus, many of them go hungry until they can get home late at night.
