Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I love my students desire to persevere through life's adversities. Most of my students live in low socio-economic environments (approximately 90% are on free or reduced lunch) with multiple siblings and single-parent household. Some older siblings are responsible for looking after their younger siblings while their parent(s) are at work. They also over come many difficulties of socio-emotional hardships. Several students do not have access to technology or internet outside of the school environment. I love how they stay positive despite their hardships.
My Project
I work at a Title I school where over 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. In addition, a large percentage of the students are English Language Learners ( ELLs). Unfortunately, many of my students don't receive praise for their accomplishments during the current learning environment. The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted my students and their families greatly. I want to bring some LIGHT to their lives!
Several of my students have been learning remotely since March of 2020.
They live in multi-generation households; some family members are in the high-risk category. For some students, the breakfast and lunch they receive at school are the only meals they consume consistently. During the afternoon hours, many of the students are hungry and would benefit from a healthy snack. If they are able to buy their own snacks, they are usually very salty and sweet. I want to teach them that there are healthy and tasty snack options.
In addition, I would like to send home care packages containing healthy snacks and inspirational handwritten message to recognize students' efforts, positive behavior, leadership, responsibility, and other accomplishments.
I want to be the adult in their life that recognizes them for who they are. They are each unique and I believe they have all the potential in the world!
