I am beyond blessed to teach 25, wonderful bundles of energy who come to school each day ready to learn and have fun. These kids are truly going to one day change the world! However, many of the students come from homes that lack financial stability. Our school is a Title I school, where the majority of the students receive reduced-price or free lunch. Even though the students face hardships at home, they give all they have in order to learn and grow.
Most of the children enter kindergarten with no preschool experience and they do not bring in daily school supplies so I usually provide community supplies that we store in buckets on the students' tables but this year I cannot have community supplies due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Many of them start school without knowing letter names or sounds, and some are unable to write the letters. Many also have little to no number sense. This does not dampen their desire to become successful readers and mathematicians. Though there is much to be learned in order to succeed academically, my students do not give up. I am so lucky to be surrounded by such hard-working students every day.
My Project
By the end of kindergarten, students are now expected to be able to read books with at least two to four lines of text. That is a huge step from previous years where kindergartners went to school to play and learn letters. Kindergartners are also now expected to be fluent in numbers, addition and subtraction before moving on to first grade.
Most students who walk through my classroom doors do not know a single letter or number, but they come in so excited to learn.
It is my job to not only teach them their letters or numbers but how to read books with two to four lines of text and add/subtract fluently to five.
The materials requested are self correcting material that will help small groups of students to successfully work independently during center time, to practice their letters, letter sounds, phonological skills, number recognition, and build their motor skills which they are lacking this school year.
