Energized for Non-Fiction:Read Alouds on CD

My students need more leveled read alouds on CD that allow multiple children to see the printed words while listening. In addition, they love reading about science topics as well about people in history (non-fiction).

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, a high percentage of my students face many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to enrich their learning by providing them with meaningful learning experiences.

My students are eager to learn, creative, active, and love to read.

My students require outlets of energy throughout the school day in order to keep them engaged in the learning process. We utilize the Daily 5 program, where students participate in a variety of literacy activities that allow them to get up, move around, and get active on a daily basis. They love and need movement to be successful learners.

My Project

The materials from this project will help to enrich the read aloud choices that students have access to on a daily basis for the Listen to Reading component of the Daily 5 literacy structure we follow. My students really enjoy non-fiction texts, but our classroom read aloud library with CDs is limited and does not include many non-fiction text choices.

Adding multiple copies of varying titles of non-fiction read alouds will enable more students to listen to these engaging texts and allow students to have discussions about each text as well as the reading strategies they are applying as they read.

In addition, the students in class are on varying reading levels, which does not allow many of them to read together and have valuable discussions about non-fiction texts, which are usually harder in readability and may be above their individual reading levels.
