This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are an inner-city magnet school in our district with a medical theme. My students come from all over the city, from all different schools, cultures, and backgrounds. In spite of the many obstacles, such as being homeless, my students achieve higher than all the neighboring high schools and have a 100% graduation rate and college acceptance rate.
Unfortunately, many of our students struggle with homelessness.
Our school is located in a low-income area with 100% of the students receiving free lunch. More than three-quarters of our students are from low-income households.
Most of our students select careers in the medical field. Their access to resources needed to prepare them for this path is very limited. DonorsChoose makes it possible for our children to have the necessary tools to succeed.
My Project
My students start their way to school at 5:00am. Many take two different public transportation busses to get to school everyday. The students receive a free breakfast and lunch. However, there is no guarantee they will get food for that necessary third meal.
We need a refrigerator stocked with Gatorade, to supply students with some electrolytes to get them through the day.
The students will also be able to grab a Gatorade for the long bus ride home. Our students struggle with normal school stressors. But many face hunger pangs and depression from not knowing where the next meal will come from. This project will help alleviate some of the anxieties.
