This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school are some of the most amazing young people I believe I've ever encountered.

Many of these students face significant hardships and challenges in their daily lives -- difficulties at home, food insecurities, lack of support from the adults around them -- and yet they come to class motivated, excited, and ready to learn each day.

With just a little bit of encouragement, direction, and -- yes -- the all-important resources, the sky is the limit for these young learners.

My Project

The last two years at this high school have been extremely difficult for our students. Most come from lower-income families who have been hit hardest during the pandemic. The items in this project are a mixture of needed class resources and attempts to improve their social and emotional well-being. Here is a more detailed list of the items on this wish list and their purpose in reaching the above goals:

-- Reporter's notebooks: In addition to English Language Arts and Creative Writing, I teach a Journalism class at the school.

Reporter's notebooks are vital for student journalists to do their jobs.

-- Floor lamps: I believe lighting is important for students' (and teachers') moods. The lighting in classrooms here is the standard overhead fluorescent lights, making the classroom look like a big-box store. These high-lumen lights will help when we choose to eschew the stark industrial lighting.

-- Interval clock: In my classes, we often do timed lighting assignments. In the past, I've either had to do that timing on my cell phone (which students can't see, so they don't know how much time they have left), or fire up the class projector and find a timer app online. This will allow students to quickly and easily see how much time remains on in-class assignments.

-- Dry-erase boards/markers: I've always wanted a classroom set of small whiteboards for students to write answers during classroom discussions.

-- Foosball table and extra balls: Our school is roughly 80 Hispanic, and they love their soccer. With these items, I hope to provide a safe place kids can come before or after school or at lunch to play "mini soccer" and let off a little steam.

Thank you for the opportunity to clarify my request.
