If worn out paperbacks show a love of reading, my students are head over heels in love. Please help add fresh books to our class library.
One of the best ways to show a child you care is to share with them a book.
Unfortunately many parents lack the funds to purchase current book titles for their sons and daughters. This project will share books with more than 50 seventh grade students in a rural Tennessee school with 70% of its students qualifying for free or reduced lunch.
My Project
Take a trip to another planet, overcome issues of self-esteem, or just escape for a while with an exciting protagonist. That is exactly what my students will get to do with your help. This project is to reenergize a classroom library and listening center in a seventh grade language arts classroom. With the addition of the new book titles students will have the opportunity to curl up with a good book in our reading center. The new titles will serve as a motivational tool to encourage students to spend more time reading. Obviously the more time students spend reading the more they increase their vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. While these skills are essential for their language arts classes, they are also crucial to all other content areas. Additionally, the batteries will allow my struggling readers to listen to novels on CDs as they follow along with the text in order to improve their reading skills.
All children should have the opportunity to spend time reading high interest books.
When students enter the fictional worlds of the fascinating characters found within the pages of a good book, it does not matter how much money their parents make, if they are wearing the latest fashions, or if they are friends with the popular kids. The characters in a book will befriend any and all of my students and assist them in reaching their academic goals.
