My students need hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, Ziploc bags, post-its, markers and scissors. Basic supplies for a creative classroom and a germ free classroom.
I believe that all kids are capable of success but its hard to work towards success without the most basic supplies. We use post-its on a daily basis, to keep track of our thinking while reading. We, also, want to grow our bodies and our minds but its a challenge when you need simple supplies.
I have 22 imaginative, social, successful students.
Most of my students face a daily struggle for their most basic needs. Despite the things they face at home, they show up every day with a smile on their face. They are eager to learn and soak up every piece of information given. My students may only be 7 and 8 but they are strong and wise beyond their years.
Our school is a Title 1 school and has been fighting to close the achievement gap for many years. We have made leaps and bounds towards improvement through changing the culture of the school. Teachers teach using best practices based on data and administrators provide support through a teared system, including coaching for teachers and leveled support for students.
We are a school and class dedicated to change! One thing we can't change is our family's finances. We make do with what we have and learn to appreciate those supplies but there are a few things that would make life just a little easier.
My Project
We spend a lot of time in text and are learning how to read like adult readers, with intention. One of the strategies we use is post-it notes. We are able to write down our thoughts, questions and opinions to help us keep track of our thinking while engrossed in a book. On a daily basis, we are given the opportunity to converse with our classmates about the literature that we are reading. It is during the partner and small group talks that we are able to elicit the opinion and suggestions of others. We learn a lot during the few minutes of share time and it is made easier through the use of post-it notes.
Also, we are an artistic class. We enjoy using our creative juices to create diagrams of our science experiments and illustrations for our narratives. Drawing pictures allows us to practice and build our content related vocabulary. We find it difficult with very little supplies. We are still learning to share but you can't share what you don't have.
Coming from a Title 1 community, my students are acutely aware of how much they do and do not have.
Running out of supplies will be one less thing that they will have to think or worry about throughout the year.
We will also be able to protect each other against germs. Therefore, reducing the risk of absenteeism and giving them more time in the classroom to work to close the achievement gap.
