Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I believe that all people achieve their full potential through education. As a special education teacher, I truly get a sense of how children are struggling within the classroom. I work with students with disabilities and often times they are also English Language Learners (ELLs). As a consequence, my students are reading two or more grade levels below their non-disabled peers and are at an educational disadvantage when it comes to state examinations. I feel it is my mission to eliminate as many barriers as I can to ensure that my students are given the same opportunities as every other child.
My school is a Title I school which means we have a high number of children that come from low-income families.
Unfortunately, our children are at an academic disadvantage because often times they come from single-parent homes or homes where there is little academic supervision due to the need to support a family. Many students are unable to purchase school supplies due to family circumstances. This means that school materials are limited or not readily available to my students.
My Project
I have seen first-hand that achievement disparities can be attributed to socioeconomic factors. Despite my students' unfortunate circumstances, I set high expectations for them and challenge them with new ways of thinking. In order to provide the best learning environment for my students I need to supply them with the most basic school materials. In our class, students need highlighters to search and find important facts during reading. Students need folders to help them organize their work and file their assignments. Lastly, in an attempt to enhance classroom projects and assignments students need markers, paper, scissors, pencils and tape. All of these supplies are so desperately needed to ensure a good start to the school year!
This year I will be teaching social studies in a self-contained setting as well as an integrated co-teaching setting.
As a special education social studies teacher, I will provide my students with the tools and skills necessary to succeed in the world. These most basic school supplies will make such a difference in my classroom. My students will not feel inadequate due to their socioeconomic circumstances. I know that these supplies will positively impact the lives of my students!
